TUKE among the winners of Falling Walls Lab again

University Highlights

The prestigious competition Falling Walls Lab Slovakia 2018 has its winners. This year, on May 31, 2018 at the Comenius University in Bratislava, young scientists and innovators once again presented their ideas of solving various problems. The event was held under the auspices of the Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic, Peter Pellegrini, who listened to the young scientists’ inspirational ideas and presented the awards to the winners.

Marek Schnitzer of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at TUKE won the second place at this unique forum of inspirational ideas and research projects. He is working in the field of clinical 3D printing and additive manufacturing. The jury appreciated his implant for a new-born baby with a cleft palate, which can be manufactured in lab conditions right after the birth, so that the newborn baby can be properly breastfed from the beginning.

The first and third places went to the Comenius University in Bratislava. The winner Lucia Lauková, in her research, is trying to bring down the walls of the sepsis condition. In sepsis patients a high concentration of extracellular DNA occurs and the goal of the research was to find out how it could be reduced. By an application of DNase enzyme she was able to show that the death rate could be reduced. The third place was awarded to Dr. Katarína Janšáková for a new method of diagnosing patients with Crohn’s disease.

We congratulate all those awarded.
